Go GLOBAL, it takes longer ...
Sunday 18 September 2011
In obedience to my "COMPLETENESS COMPULSION" ie because I can't bear to leave out any snippets of detail that I think are interesting or relevant, I have decided (until the next time I change my mind) to EXPAND THE SCOPE of my book about my grandfather to include EVERYTHING about HIS WHOLE LIFE.
This means, of course, that I have to change the name of the book from NOT THIS HELL OF STRIFE to a more GLOBAL title.
As I believe that on balance Thomas Kermode's life was a very good interesting and positive one, I have decided to name the overall book "BONZER". I can't think of a better title.
The term BONZER is typically Australian and was very much in vogue during my Grandfather's time. The Macquarie Dictionary (1985) definition is: "Bonzer" - Colloq. Excellent, attractive, pleasing. Also bonza, boshter.
Thomas uses the word "bonzer" many times in his letters home to May, his wife.
Thus -
I took out your photo today and had a look at you. You look bonzer.
My nice girl who is such a bonzer cobber.
You bonzer kid!
My bonzer sweetheart.
I wrote you a bonzer lot of notes before I left Hurdcott.
(and so on ...)
